about

Dear visitors,

As well as Lassie, return so Psycho Film: the festival for all those who do have brain (and are not afraid to use it), is back - for the fourth time.

The same as in past years it offers you a chance to watch numbers of both fiction movies and documentaries with psychiatric, psychological and sexuological topics. As now is traditional all the movies will be commented by Bohnice mental hospital specialists, or the authors, and this year also by Opava mental hospital experts and guest doctors from Poland and Germany. The festival takes place in Prague on June 3rd-5th, and then for the first time travels to Opava on June 8th-10th. For more information about where exactly the screenings take places see Festival Places.

Main part of the whole program in 2011 takes the section named Between Faith and Madness. This theme section focuses on both positive and negative influence between psychical health, or social standard on one hand and religion and spirituality on the other. Within the frame of this section movies that deal with religious fanatism, obsession and madness – as well as extatic visions and noble asceticism, which now appear to be problematic phenomens, will be shown. Special attention then will be paid to modern mental treatment method called hagiotherapy. This method helps mental hospital patients find their aims in life through a spiritual experience. The festival will also ponder on the role of psychiatry in the modern world, while this is among some observers taken as a scientific substitute of the institution of confession booth. Comments on movies of this section will be provided not only by psychiatrists but also theologists and religionists. If interested, see Main Topic for detailed thematic text.

The second festival program section is named Splendours and Miseries of Conformism. This section tries to find a border between normality and abnormality – not in terms of exact sciences (including medicine) but more from the relative social convention point of view. Is it really always „normal“ to follow obligatory and widely accepted norms if those in the present place and time can destroy man´s self-esteem, individual identity or even mental stability?

Other program sections then will be dedicated to traditional festival topics: Psychiatric Treatment & Mental Disorders, Addictions and Sexology.

The entrance to all screenings is as always free of charge!

We hope you find our program interesting and are looking forward to seeing you at some of the commented screenings!
